Self-Portrait in which I Appear

as a source of light
next to a source of light:

Brooklyn, stranger's apartment at midnight, summer 2011

In my early twenties, I considered it an intelligence that my greatest goal was to be the woman behind anyone successful.
I considered myself of value because people of actual value needed a support system.

A pair of strong legs, that's what I was, and that's what I strove to be.
When lovers thanked me, I said I was a mirror. No trace of sarcasm; no sense of apology underneath.

Some people battle wanting to be seen; I battle wanting to be hidden.
